When I wrote the previous post about racial abuse, I used the way teachers invalidate racism by making the comparison to kids who are overweight or wear glasses. Now, of course, I think it is wrong to bully any child, and of course, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that teasing a child for being too fat, or wearing glasses is extremely painful.
My problem with this type of teacher thinking is that wearing glasses or being too fat is seen as what I would term: correctable defects. Kids can lose weight, kids can get contacts, and so on.
I know that there are many discussions about the oppression olympics, I have read many of the arguments, and my particular post was not intended to be about that. To me, comparing being oppressed for being overweight to ethnic hatred is just not a valid comparison. And, unlike the people at the KOS who call me "hostile" and "asshole" and my favorite, "un-American", I never called them any names, I just offered my own opinion, even if it was a snarky opinion.
Now, to associate ethnic hatred and the double standard of white privilege with wearing glasses or being overweight is just more defective thinking. But that is what many people think, including and especially, teachers. And it is just one more way that teachers dismiss racism and excuse their lack of action and invalidate the experience of the child.
Finally, I would like to add that the main issue, that of double standard treatment that the Korean child received, in addition to the lack of anti-racism programs in schools was the primary topic that I was writing about.
The white kid THREW THE FIRST PUNCH, and added "Fucking Chinese" to it, and that white kid did not get in ANY TROUBLE, in fact, the Korean child is still facing assault charges.Does it really matter that this case was in Canada? Nope, it can and does happen all the time, in the United States.
